CHANGES
TO AMERICAN RED CROSS POLICY REGARDING TORNADO SAFETY
As you may know, on
Wednesday, April 29, The Weather Channel reported a change in American
Red Cross policy with regards to tornado safety recommendations.
The specific change
pertains to what people should do if they are outdoors, or in a mobile
(manufactured) home, or in a car and without access to sturdy shelter
during a tornado. Previously the American Red Cross adhered to the
National Weather Service's recommendation that people should lie flat
in a ditch or low-lying area.
However, after careful
consideration, the Advisory
Council for First Aid, Aquatics, Safety and Preparedness (ACFASP),
an independent panel of health and safety experts that advise the Red
Cross, found no scientific evidence to support this long-held tenant.
Therefore, the revised American Red Cross recommendation is
provided HERE.

they did during 2008.

training before being deployed, so now is the time to sign up for
classes,

Register
as Safe and Well
Immediately following Hurricane
Katrina in 2005, the American Red Cross created Katrinasafe.org, a
database intended to help families reconnect after the storm. Evacuees
were able to register online, by phone or through registries on other
organizations’ Websites. The database proved successful and
has since been renamed Safe and Well.
The Safe and Well Website is an
effective tool to allow families to learn the status of their loved
ones. The wildfires in Southern California alone prompted 1,505 new
registrations, nearly 34,000 searches, and 402 successful matches on
the site.
Safe and Well is available 24
hours a day, 365 days a year and is accessible in both English and
Spanish.
